A New life in Canada

A New Life in Canada

A New Life in Canada can be a bit of a workup but it definitely is a class of its own. Last year was not very easy on new immigrants to Canada. They had to face issues like joblessness, finding places to quarantine, dealing with high rents, rentals not being available etc. The major factor of heartache being joblessness. It didn’t only affect new immigrants but was an issue overall as plenty of people went off work. Many factors played a role like businesses going bankrupt, layoffs to reduce operational costs, switching to online stores, reduced working hours, provincial lockdowns etc. And this is not something that just affected Canada, it was a similar scenario in most of the countries due to the pandemic that hit the world.

Steps to Remember:

Landing in Canada is different during the pandemic with new rules, regulations and laws coming in to affect. As a new immigrant to Canada, you need to take the following steps to ensure a smooth landing:

  1. Have an address available for the 14 day quarantine – Airbnb, Hotel, Motel, House etc.
  2. Mandatory requirement for a Negative PCR Test – 72 hours prior to your flight
  3. Passport or Travel Document – Original
  4. Have the Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) – Original
  5. Proof of Funds – Need to be presented if requested by the Immigration Officer
  6. ArriveCAN should be updated before landing in Canada

Now that you have ensured that all necessary requirements are fulfilled, you are ready to land in Canada. Welcome to Canada in 2021.

Quarantine Requirements:

As new immigrants or travelers to Canada, there are specific quarantine requirements in place. You have to leave the airport and head directly to the address of quarantine. You are to quarantine for 14 days mandatory, which means that you cannot leave the quarantine address and head out. Or meet other people during this period of time.

Wherever you quarantine, you are required to stay segregated from the general population, even family. Use a separate washroom and even use the general spaces at separated times.

Canada has setup an automated call that goes to your designated phone number to check on you constantly if you are following the required quarantine rules. You have to answer honestly by selecting the appropriate options. The answers are compiled to ensure that correct process is being followed.

In order to receive grocery and general medicines, you will have to order online as you are not allowed to leave your quarantine address. There are many options available in major metropolitan cities of Canada. Here are a few for your reference:

  1. Walmart Canada
  2. No Frills
  3. Loblaws
  4. Voila by Sobeys
  5. Real Canadian Superstores

You can also request for medicine deliveries from the following few Medical Stores:

  1. Well.ca
  2. Rexall Direct
  3. MyRXHealth

What’s next?

For a new life in Canada, you can use these 14 days diligently by applying to Jobs in Canada, getting your paperwork ready and in place. You can even apply for your SIN Number online. Even banks are helping new immigrants to open up accounts from the comfort of their homes. You can buy a car sitting home and browsing online. Things have gone online for most of the needs of a new immigrant. You can definitely have your life setup and ready for when you go out of quarantine.

“Fun Fact: Most of the new immigrants landing in Ontario visit Niagara Falls, Ontario in the first month of landing in Canada.”

New Year – New Beginnings:

Starting this New Year 2021, I have decided to make myself available to new immigrants for queries – Monday thru Friday. You can contact me using the Contact Us page, via Instagram or Facebook. Once we connect, I can share a video call link using Zoom for a period of 15-20 minutes to answer your queries. You will just have to book a time-slot in advance. And No, this is not a charged service. This is how helpful Canadians are and you can always give it forward! Consequently, you can also join the Facebook Group “The Immigrants – Canada” to post your questions and queries.

Looking forward to talking with you all and hopefully helping you in settling in to a new life in Canada.

Happy New Year. Good luck with your journey to a New Life in Canada.
