Jobs in Canada

Jobs in Canada are ample and sufficiently available. The main dilemma and the reason why Canada is looking to bestow Permanent Residency on 400,000+ people per year for the next three years is: Availability of jobs but non-availability of human resources to fulfill these jobs. It is a good problem to have. But then again, the process of finding the perfect resources is a long one and definitely takes time.

What are these jobs? How much do they pay? Will you get the same job that you left elsewhere?

These are a few questions that I have been asked over the years. There are many jobs in Canada but finding the right job takes time and patience.

Approaching the Job Search:

As I mentioned in my blog on The Preparations, you need to start your search prior to your Flight to Canada. You have to ensure that you have gone through the type of jobs that are available, around the time you will be landing in Canada. Finding the right job requires research, patience and resilience. You should be able to accept change and being a survivor does help you here.

The approach you take towards finding and getting a job decides on how your life is Canada is going to be as an Immigrant. You will both be fishing through your savings and depleting those wells or you will be filling the well up and skimming off of the top. Your survival depends on you finding an income source and work for it.

Looking for a Job:

As an immigrant, when moving to Canada, you know where you will land. There are multiple sources, job banks, classifieds etc. that you can visit online and search for jobs. You will have to apply well in advance to ensure that you have something going on for yourself by the time you arrive in Canada.

The best places to search for jobs online are as follow:

  1. Canada Job Banks / Resources
  2. Job Bank
  3. Indeed
  4. Workopolis
  5. Monster

Expectations vs. Realities:

Every person will endure a different kind of an experience. Therefore we can’t benchmark the job search experience of one individual and think the same will be endured by others too. I have met many immigrants who have been connected to their right jobs as soon as they landed in Canada and there are people like me who took long to settle in.

My job search was a long and tiring process. I had moved to Canada from Dubai, U.A.E., leaving my job then as a Logistics and Purchasing Manager. When I arrived here, I was expecting to acquire a similar job or something closer to my skill set in any industry in Canada. I was called upon for a few interviews and they all ended up in denials. I was asked if I had Canadian experience and/or education which was a bench mark that some companies were looking to hire. That amazed me at first and then I made my peace with it. I did have the skill set but I was just not the right fit for those positions because I lacked local experience and education. Then I realized after two months of my search that I needed to lower my expectations and start my career over from the bottom up.

Therefore, I took up a job based on my skillset as a Technical Support Advisor in a BPO; not to forget that a Call Centre Representative was my first job ever. It did not deter me in my career aspirations. I had to find the right job, which I did, but I needed to survive. And there was nothing better than working a job, ensuring a steady income stream and then continuing the job search.

Finding the Right Job:

There are times that you will suffice with what is given. But then, striving for more is very human. If you want to ensure that you find your perfect job or perfect fit, you will have to continue searching for that job even while you have a steady income and job. If you stop looking, you decide to commit to the job that you already have.

While studying Human Resource Management, there was a certain saying that stuck with me. If you wish to progress further in your careers, ensure that you switch your jobs in 900 days if you are not progressing in your job. The rationale behind it was very simple. Learning stops, you are not acquiring new skills and you are just a part of the wheel going round and round.

In the first year of coming to Canada, I switched three jobs until I landed the right one. And it definitely is an interesting position that I enjoy working at. Utilizes all my skills and keeps me busy.

Wages in Canada:

You can work any job in Canada as there are certain limitation on the basic or minimum wages provincially. These wages are set by the Provincial Governments in Canada. For example, minimum wage in Ontario is at $14.00 per hour and British Columbia is at $14.60.

Individuals in Canada are paid either an hourly rate or a fixed annual income. They can either be permanently staffed, temporarily staffed or contractual. In any case, the bench mark for remuneration is set by the Provincial Governments and all organizations have to abide by these laws. Audits are done by the Canada Revenue Agency to ensure that these laws are being followed. Any organization found guilty of not paying the minimum set wages by the Provincial Governments are fined heftily.

Jobs in Canada:

Equality and value of human life are amongst many important pillars of Canada. You can earn an income in any way possible. There are no limitations to how you earn money, the only one being that it should be legal and lawful. You can earn money as an employee, a business owner, a driver, a labourer, an engineer, a Manager etc. There are no limitations to how many jobs you do. There is no limitations on how much money you make, you just need to ensure that you pay your taxes like any law abiding immigrant or citizen of Canada.

That is all there is to know about jobs in Canada. Just make sure that you have those CVs ready and get on with applying for jobs.
